A vendor was on Monday remanded to prison on a charge that he snatched a chain and pendant.
Victor Roberts, 24, denied the police’s allegation that he, on May 16, at Avenue of the Republic, snatched the chain valued $80,000 from Zola Campbell, when the charge was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court One. It is the prosecution’s case that Roberts saw Campbell walking south on the western side of the street, at approximately 1pm, when he snatched the chain and made good his escape. At 2:10pm on the same day, Mangru added, Campbell pointed out Roberts at the Shell Gas Station in Georgetown and he was arrested and charged.
Roberts told the court that he had a similar charge levelled against him dismissed some time ago. He further alleged that he was picked up by the police and taken to Campbell, who he claimed took a while to positively identify him.
Additionally Roberts begged the Chief Magis-trate for leniency and reasonable bail.
The bail application was subsequently refused, after Mangru objected, citing the seriousness and prevalence and the likelihood Roberts may not show up to answer the larceny form person charge. The case was adjourned until June 6th.
