Trial starts in 2008 Better Hope murder

The trial of Anthony George, who is accused of murdering Ralph Jacobs in 2008, began on Friday in the High Court.

George is on trial before Justice Dawn Gregory and a 12-member jury. He is being represented by Attorney Sonia Parag while Mercedes Thompson and Natasha Backer are presenting the state’s case.

The mixed jury was empaneled on Wednesday.

George is accused of murdering Jacobs during a family dispute at Better Hope, East Coast Demerara in December 2008. Jacobs, who resided at Victoria Road, Plaisance died from a single stab wound in the region of the heart following the heated dispute.

According to reports, Jacobs’s daughter and stepson were sent to buy a phone card in the Plaisance area but took a long time to return. As such Jacobs went in search of them and after an argument, he allegedly began kicking and hitting the boy.

George reportedly got involved and had a physical altercation with Jacobs.

The state attorneys called their first three witnesses, one of whom stated that the accused and Jacobs were drinking in a liquor restaurant before the incident occurred. The trial is continuing.
