Grove man remanded on charge of assaulting spouse

Alistair Simmons, 49, of 60 Grove Squatting Area, was remanded to prison yesterday after he appeared before a city magistrate charged with assaulting his spouse and for damaging household items as well.

It is alleged that Simmons, on May 21, at Grove, assaulted Chandrika Goberdhan. It is also alleged that Simmons, on May 26, at the same address, unlawfully and maliciously damaged two window curtains, valued at $6,000, two paint buckets, valued at $2,500, four women’s tights, valued at $1,500, and a bucket. He denied both allegations.

According to Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones, Simmons went to the home he and Goberdhan shared and threatened to burn down the house. Jones added that Simmons then lit two window curtains and ripped Goberdhan’s tights and assaulted her. On that note, Jones objected to bail, added that the two share a home as common-law partners and the risk of tampering with the witness exists.

Magistrate Ann McLennan later remanded Simmons and transferred the case to the Providence Magistrate’s Courts.

The case will be called again on June 9th.
