A young man was yesterday remanded to prison on a charge that he allegedly posed as a garbage collector and stole a woman’s purse.
The charge read by city magistrate Faith McGusty stated that on June 4, at Robb Street, Trefton Barker, 18 of Leopold Street, stole a cellphone, valued $5,000, a handbag valued 12,000, $20,800 as well as an identification card and a National Insurance Scheme card belonging to Tiffany Gilbert.
He pleaded guilty to the charge.
Gilbert, who works at the Demerara Mutual Life Insurance building on Robb Street, said she had just put her bag down and soon found that it was missing.
She added that she checked with all of her co-workers but no one knew where her bag was.
She added that Barker’s grandmother works in the top flat of the building and Barker somehow gained access to the building.
She said staffers said he was seen in the building and when asked what he was doing, Barker said he was the garbage man.
Barker said to the court that he saw the bag, did not know whose it was so he decided to pick it up.
A probation report was ordered and he was remanded into custody until June 23, when he is expected to be sentenced.
