Search of house lands man on drug trafficking charge

A man was yesterday remanded to prison on a drug trafficking charge after 470 grammes of marijuana were discovered during a search of his home.

Lloyd Allen, 59, appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor Oswald Massiah related to the court that Allen was arrested yesterday at approximately 3 pm after a search of the man’s house at Poinsettia Lane, Roxanne Burnham Gardens revealed the presence of the illegal substance.

This search was done in the presence of the Allen along with two other males who were at the premises at the time. Massiah said that after the marijuana was discovered, the males, one of whom was a relative and another who claimed to live downstairs, denied having any knowledge of the substance.

Allen’s lawyer, Euclin Gomes, making his bail application, argued that Allen should be released on bail because of special circumstances. He said that because the substance was not found in Allen’s personal room and also because others had access to the room, the prosecution will have to prove that Allen is guilty.

However, Magistrate McLennan declared that the special circumstances outlined by Gomes did not satisfy the court and Allen was remanded until July 11th.
