American citizen Jermaine Carter found himself behind bars yesterday after sniffer dogs detected seven kilos of cocaine in packets of powdered milk in his luggage at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.
Carter, who resides on Liberty Avenue in New York, appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday afternoon and he pleaded not guilty to a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
It was the case of Prosecutor Stephen Teleford that yesterday, just after midnight, Carter checked two suitcases in as he prepared to board a Dynamic Airways flight bound for Piarco Airport.
Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) sniffer dogs, which were present at the airport, sniffed the luggage and indicated the presence of narcotics. The owner of the luggage was identified as Carter and the two suitcases were searched. The search revealed that there were three packets of Kerrygold milk powder. In Carter’s presence, the packages were opened and revealed what the ranks suspected to be cocaine. Carter was notified of the suspicions and arrested.
Carter, who is a father of six, is due to appear next Tuesday in Court One before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
