Canje joiner found floating in creek

A joiner from Angoy’s Avenue, was pulled from the Canje Creek on Tuesday morning after persons discovered his body floating near the Tucberg/New Amsterdam koker.

Denis Williamson, 19, of Levi dam, went missing on Sunday afternoon after he went swimming in the creek sometime around 1pm. According to reports, Williamson along with his three brothers, two cousins and some friends went for an afternoon swim at the popular “hangout spot” when he went missing and was presumed drowned.

The deceased’s great aunt Lillian Grant told Stabroek News that the family is puzzled about what happened at the creek; however, they understand that the group had been swimming near the ‘blacka’ when Williamson disappeared. The woman also said that while her nephews were swimming a second group of boys jumped into the creek and were thrashing around. “We don’t know if anybody jump on him and he went down and did not come up back,” she said.

Grant recalled that when the boys realised that Williamson had vanished they went home to relay the tragic news. It was only then that the family launched a search party, which proved futile. The search for the body continued on Monday without success but yesterday morning the family received a call informing them about the body floating in the river. They went to the scene and positively identified the body sometime around 7am.

The body is currently at the Arokium Funeral Parlour awaiting a post mortem examination.

Williamson’s parents have been inconsolable since the incident. He also leaves to mourn five siblings and other relatives.
