Passport fib costs man $80,000

A man who lied about never owning nor applying for a passport was yesterday fined $80,000 when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Sasenarine Etwaroo accepted that between November 17 and 30, 2012, for the purposes of procuring a passport, he knowingly made an untrue statement on a passport application form in favour of himself stating that he never owned a passport.

The man also pleaded guilty to making a false statement that he had never previously applied for a passport.

The prosecution indicated to the court that the facts were as stated in the charge. No further details were presented.

In tears, Etwaroo apologized to the court and accepted responsibility for his actions and pledged that it would not happen again. He begged for lenience and indicated to the magistrate that he did not want to waste the court’s time.

After listening to his plea, the magistrate fined Etwaroo $40,000 on each charge with the alternative of one month imprisonment.
