Tutorial High School reunion starts today

Some 450 Tutorial High School alumni are expected from overseas for the school’s 12th triennial reunión which starts today with a church service at the school’s compound, Woolford Avenue, Thomas Lands.

According to a press reléase from the Tutorial High School Alumni Association (THSAA), some 50 arrived on Friday night and were greeted with a cultural reception, compliments of the Ministry of Tourism. Another 200 were expected yesterday and dozens had already arrived earlier, it added.

The old students are coming from the Toronto Chapter in Canada; the New York Support Group in the USA; the London Chapter in the United Kingdom, and from several countries in the Caribbean, the release said. It added that this is a “milestone reunion” of the THSAA. The last reunion was held in Toronto in 2011.

Today’s church service will be presided over by Monsignor Terrence Montrose of the Brickdam Cathedral who is himself an old student of the school. The release said the ministers and senior officials of the Education and Tourism ministries are expected to attend and a reception will immediately follow.

Other activities during the week of the reunion include courtesy calls, a folk and wild meat night, tours to Kaieteur Falls and other eco-sites in the hinterland, and a gala dinner next Saturday evening. The reunion ends next Sunday with a day of fun and games at the GDF Ground.

The association revealed too that the reunion coincides with the 75th (Diamond) anniversary of the school which was founded on September 1, 1939 by Austin Cosmo Castello. It said all anniversary events have been tailored as a tribute to his renowned tenacity and altruism.

His daughter, June-Ann Castello, was expected to arrive in Guyana last evening to play a significant role in the celebrations.
