Driver charged in death of remigrant cyclist

Four months after cyclist Roy Mendonca was fatally struck along Carifesta Avenue, the man behind the wheel of the bus that hit him has been charged.

Sookraj Permaul, 29, denied that on April 2, at Carifesta Avenue, he drove motor vehicle BNN 6492 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Mendonca, when he appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Permaul, who resides at 41 Nootenzuil, East Coast Demerara, was admitted to $800,000 bail after a successful petition by his attorney.

His attorney, Omeyanna Hamilton, requested reasonable bail on the grounds that he had no antecedents and posed no risk of flight.

The matter will be called again on September 9.

Mendonca, 67, of Lot 281 Forshaw Street, Queenstown, was a sports and fitness enthusiast who remigrated to Guyana a few years ago.
