Queen’s College (QC) student Elisa Hamilton was today announced as the student with the most Grade 1s for Guyana in this year’s Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) exams when Education Minister Priya Manickchand told the nation via a live television stream that she secured 19 Grade 1s.
She was followed by a student of Skeldon Line Path Secondary School, Bharti Bhoje and another QC colleague Larissa Wiltshire who both scored 17 Grade 1s.
However, the minister made it clear that Hamilton may not be declared as the country’s top student as CSEC uses different criteria to award the top student, an analysis that is yet to be done.
According to Manickchand the overall pass rate for grades 1 to 3 was 60.21%- a marginal increase from last year. She also announced that with a 38.7% pass rate from grades 1 to 3 in Mathematics this was the best the country has ever done.
She said that 35 subjects were written by 77,361 students and there were excellent performances in 12 subjects, but English A and Mathematics were not among those.
Fifty-two students received 11 or more Grades 1s.

Background
In 2014, there was an increase in the number of candidates who wrote the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate examination. The statistics which follow reflect the performance of both public and private school candidates. It must be noted that the private candidates amounted to approximately 37% of the total entries.

Analysis of Results
The analysis of the 2014 CSEC results revealed that the overall pass rate at the General and Technical proficiencies for Grade One to Three was 60.21% as opposed to 59.31% in 2013. The overall 2014 Grade One to Grade Four pass rate was 88.44%.
These rates compared with last year, indicate an marginal increase in the Grade One to Three and Grade One to Four passes.
Candidates from Guyana wrote thirty-five (35) subjects at the examination.
Of these subjects the results indicated excellent performances in twelve (12) subjects where the Grade One to Three passes exceeded seventy five percent (75%). The twelve subjects are: Agriculture Science (SA), Food & Nutrition, French, Home Economics Management, Information Technology, Physics, Religious Education, Theatre Arts, Electronic Document Preparation and Management, Physical Education & Sport, Additional Mathematics and Building Technology (Const.).
Satisfactory performances were recorded in nineteen (19) subjects where the Grades One to Three passes exceeded fifty percent (50%) while Grades One to Four passes were in excess of seventy five percent (75%): Agricultural Science (DA), Biology, Caribbean History, Chemistry, Clothing & Textiles, Economics, English B, Geography, Integrated Science, Office Administration, Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business, Social Studies, Spanish, Technical Drawing, Human and Social Biology, Building Technology (Woods), Electrical & Electronic Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology.
The overall performances in four (4) subjects were unsatisfactory. The Grades One to Three passes in these subjects were less than fifty percent (50%). These subjects are English A, Mathematics, Music and Visual Arts.
In Mathematics, the Grade One to Three pass rate for 2014 is 38.7%. This indicates an over 9% increase from 2013, where the Grade One to Three pass rate was recorded as 28.92%. The Grade One to Three performances in English A recorded a marginal increase from 45.69% in 2013 to 46.98% in 2014. Performance in English B remained relatively constant. In 2013 the Grade One to Three pass rate was 61.06% and 61.45% in 2014.
Additional Mathematics which was written for the first time in 2012 continues to show further improvement from of 58.33% in 2013 to 80.83% in 2013 and 86.26% in 2014.
Excellent performances were recorded in Agriculture Science (SA) and Physics. Improvements were recorded in Biology and Chemistry compared to the 2013 performance. Grade One to Three performances in Physics showed considerable improvement from 54.38% in 2013 to 75.13% in 2014.
The Grade One to Three performances in Human and Social Biology improved from 61.38% in 2013 to 62.2% in 2014.
In the Business Education subjects – the performance in Office Administration, Principles of Accounts and Principles of Business could be described as satisfactory. However, it should be noted that Information Technology (General) once again recorded an excellent performance this year 82.36%.
In the Home Economics subjects, increases were noted in all areas. The pass rate in Food & Nutrition was 80.94% in 2013 and 88.12% in 2014. Significant improvement was noted in Clothing & Textiles from 2013 to 2013 where the Grade One to Three pass rate was 47.11% and 63.41% respectively. Home Economic Management moved from 73.01% in 2013 to 88.97% in 2014.
In the Industrial Technology subjects – Building Technology (Const), Building Technology (Woods) and Electrical & electronic Technology recorded a decline in performances in the Grade One to Three. Performance in Mechanical Engineering Technology moved from 78.62% in 2013 to 72.74% in 2014.
In the Modern Languages subjects – French and Spanish recorded excellent and satisfactory performances respectively. Grade One to Three pass rate for Spanish is 62.61% in 2014. An improvement was note in the Grade One to Three passes in French from 85.71% in 2013 to 88.65% in 2014.
Excellent performance was recorded in Theatre Arts with Grade One to Three passes over 75%. Physical Education & Sports recorded 100% Grade One to Three pass rate.

CARIBBEAN ADVANCED PROFICIENCY EXAMINATION
REPORT ON PRELIMINARY RESULTS
BACKGROUND
In May/June 2014, seven hundred and ninetyeight (798) candidates from
nine(9) Secondary Schools and three (3) Private centres wrote the
Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination in Guyana.
The twelve Examination Centres were:

Region 6: Berbice High, New Amsterdam Multilateral
Region 4: President’s College
Region 3: Saraswati Vidya Niketan
Georgetown: The Bishops’ High, Queen’s College, St Joseph’s High,
St Rose’s High,St Stanislaus College, New Guyana Sch and Adult Education Association
A summary of entries over the past two (2) years is as follows:

Candidates offered Units in twenty three subject areas. Each Unit comprises three
Modules (equivalent to 150 Credit Hours), and is separately examined and
certified.
Candidates from Guyana offered forty (40) units at this year’s examination.
The Single Unit Subjects offered this year were:
Caribbean Studies and Communication Studies.
The Double Unit Subjects offered were:
Accounting, Applied Mathematics, Art & Design, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Electrical & Electronic Technology, Environmental Science, Food & Nutrition, Geography, Geometrical & Mechanical Eng. Drawing, History, Information Technology, Law,Literatures in English, Management of Business,Pure Mathematics, Physics, Sociology and Spanish.
The results for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination are reported on
aseven-point scale – Grades 1 – VII. Candidates attaining Grades 1 – V have attained an
acceptable standard for matriculation purposes, with Grade One representing an
excellent performance, while Grade Two and Three represent very good and good
standards of performance respectively.

The overall pass rate in 2014 is 85.07.This is a slight decrease from 2013 where a pass rate of 86.6% was attained. Anincrease was noted in the GradesIII to V performances in 2014.
The gender distribution of the overall pass rate is 36% males and 64% females.
In the following twelve (12) units, candidates obtained a 100% pass rate (with Grade one to five passes): Art & Design Unit 1; Electrical and Electronic Technology Unit 1; Environmental Science Unit 1; Food and Nutrition Unit 1; Geography Unit 1; Spanish Unit 1; Digital Media Unit 1; Food & Nutrition Unit 2; Geography Unit 2; Information Technology Unit 2; Literatures in English Unit 2 and Spanish Unit 2.
Further, in the following twenty five(25) Units the pass rate of candidates was 75% or higher with Grade One to Five passes: Accounting Unit 1 and Unit 2;Applied Mathematics Unit 1 and Unit 2; Biology Unit 1 and Unit 2; Caribbean Studies Unit 1; Chemistry Unit 2; Communication Studies Unit 1; Computer Science Unit 1 and Unit 2; Economics Unit 1 and Unit 2; Environmental Science Unit 2; Information Technology Unit 1; Law Unit 1 and Unit 2; Literatures in English Unit 1; Management of Business Unit 1 and Unit 2; Physics Unit 1 and Unit 2; Pure Mathematics Unit 2; Sociology Unit 1 and Unit 2.
In four (4) units candidates obtained a pass rate of 50% or higher (but below 75%) with Grade One to Five passes. The units are: Chemistry Unit 1; History Unit 1; Pure Mathematics Unit 1 and History Unit 2.
No Unit recorded a pass rate that was below 50%.
Digital Media was written for the first time in 2014 and 100% pass rate was secured. Caribbean Studies and Communication Studies continues to record and over 95% pass rate while Pure Mathematics Unit 1 remained somewhat constant with 58.59% in 2013 and 57.73% in 2014.
Several candidates recorded outstanding performances at this year’s Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination. Among the top performers is Jonelle James of Queen’s College who secured Grade One passes in five units.
