Man jailed for attempt to smuggle ganja into prison

After admitting to an attempt to lob a quantity of marijuana into the Camp Street Prison compound, a young Albouystown man has joined the ranks of its inmates.

Devon Nedderman, 22, of 58 Hill Street, Albouystown, copped to a charge that on August 9, at Georgetown, he had 250 grammes of cannabis in his possession.

After the reading of the charge at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, Nedderman, a labourer, told Magistrate Ann McLennan that he was guilty with explanation. When given a chance to explain himself, however, he said he did not want to say anything.

The prosecution’s case was that at about 10pm on the day in question, police, who were on duty in the Camp Street area, observed Nedderman running from the wall of the prison into a nearby yard after he spotted them.

The court heard that the lawmen give chase and after apprehending him they enquired what he was doing and why he began running after seeing them.

The man, prosecutor Deniro Jones said, replied: “Is lil weed ah guh fuh throw over the prison wall.”

According to Jones, Nedderman then took the police to the area where he showed them a bag. A search of the bag then unearthed a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems, believed to be cannabis.

He was then told of the offence committed and taken to the Alberttown Police Station, where the substance was weighed in his presence.

He was then arrested and charged.

Magistrate McLennan sentenced Nedderman to three years in prison and fined him $300,000.
