Miss Emancipation Queen to be crowned tomorrow night

After weeks of training, nine empowered Afro-Guyanese women from across Guyana will tomorrow evening vie for the title of Miss Emancipation Queen under the theme “Go Natural.”

The annual Miss Emancipation Queen Pageant was started during the celebration of the International Year for people of African Descent by the Miss Emancipation Committee. The committee aims to empower Afro-Guyanese girls “through culture, awareness, and education,” a release from the body said.

Speaking with Stabroek News yesterday, President of the committee Melissa Varswyk explained that patrons will be privy to a night of rich African culture when the girls take the stage to showcase their heritage. The segments, she said, will include spoken word pieces by the delegates on what it means to be an emancipated woman, African-styled business and evening attire, and a talent section featuring singing, dancing, and drumming.

The women were privy to lectures by scholars such as Norman Ng-A-Qui and, according to Varswyk, are “highly educated in African history and culture.”

The third annual Miss Emancipation Queen Pageant will be held at the National Cultural Centre (NCC) and begins at 8 PM. Tickets are available at the NCC for $1,000 and $2,000.
