Take advantage of UG, students told

The 2014/2015 academic year of the University of Guyana (UG) will officially commence on Monday and students were yesterday urged to take full advantage of the institution during their time there.

Several speakers dispensed the advice during the ceremonial opening at UG’s George Walcott Lecture Theatre yesterday and also called for greater involvement by alumni.

In her address, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Barbara Reynolds noted the privilege Guyanese have by simply having access to education. Worldwide, there are millions who suffer through extreme circumstances, such as war and famine and lack access to education and information, she pointed out. Therefore, she said, local students must take advantage of the opportunity of tertiary education.

“Is it going to be easy?” she asked. “If we work together, with the kind of will you bring and your enthusiasm…then we can find principal elements that will provide UG with solutions to some of its problems and challenges.”

The advice was reiterated by Senior Vice-President of UG’s Student Society Joshua Griffith, who emphasised the role students’ play in the improvement of the institution. “UGSS encourages each student to develop a culture of involvement in campus life,” Griffith said. “Students are the key stakeholders at this institution. It is time we play a more active role in the development of our university,” he added.

Until August 29, students will be privy to orientation sessions across campus. On August 28, the university will host an interactive forum with parents and guardians of new students under the age of 21. The forum is the first of its kind and will address key issues towards ensuring the smooth transition of students into university life.
