Man blames drunkenness after theft of Guinness

Although admitting that he stole two cases of Guinness, a man yesterday told a court that he was drunk when he committed the crime.

“I was drunk at the time, but I did take it,” Tony Ramotar told city magistrate Judy Latchman.

He was fined $25,000 or, if he fails to pay the fine, will have to spend one month in prison.

Ramotar accepted that on August 23, at Georgetown, he stole the Guinness, valued $9,800, and which was the property of Omeshwar Lall.

Ramotar, however, quickly pointed out that the items had been returned to Lall—a claim substantiated by the prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant.

After hearing the case, Magistrate Latchman informed Ramotar, a father of three, that he would be fined.

“I ain’t get that kind-a money meh worship,” Ramotar said as he was about to leave the courtroom after the fine was imposed.
