Vendor in court over $2.4M toilet paper

A vendor accused of stealing 1300 bales of toilet paper valued in excess of $2M was on Friday admitted to bail in the sum of $150,000 when he appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Harold Sampson denied on June 1 at Georgetown he conspired with known persons to defraud the Guyana Soft Touch Inc., by obtaining 1300 bales of toilet paper valued $2,470,000.

No facts further than those stated in the charge were presented to the court.

Sampson, 61, who was unrepresented by counsel said he is vendor at the Stabroek Market.

The prosecution had no objections to the man being admitted to bail which the court set at $150,000.

Sampson requested a reduction stating he could not afford the amount granted. The court however firmly stated the amount would not be reduced.

The case will be called again on September 30 before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at Court One.
