Ramotar congratulates Brazil, lauds cooperation

President Donald Ramotar last evening congratulated the Brazilian Government as the country celebrated its 192nd Independence anniversary.

GINA reported Ramotar as saying that in Guyana’s own quest for sustainable development, it was pursuing policies in trade and attracting foreign investment in sectors such as agriculture, mining infrastructure development and the Information Technology sector. He said that the collaboration with Brazil has been important in this regard, pointing to support for the development of Guyana’s hydropower potential and the Lethem to Linden road link.

The Guyanese Head of State said that like Brazil, Guyana fully subscribes to its principled stand for respect for sovereignty, integrity and the resolution of disputes in a peaceful manner.

“In the twenty first century there is no place for old territorial issues and for lingering border problems”.

Ramotar paid tribute to the late Vice Consul Thetonio Santa Cruz, who died following an accident in Lethem, several weeks ago.

In brief remarks, Brazilian Ambassador Lineu Pupo de Paula, said “Exactly in one month’s time, we will have elections to choose a new president, and no matter who wins, the real winner will be the Brazilian people”.

The Brazilian Ambassador echoed Ramotar’s view that in the present century there was no place for old territorial disputes.

“In a time when the countries of the region unite around UNASUR, the OAS and other regional bodies, there is no room for such matters”. The ambassador said that the two countries have large joint infrastructure projects that will “take their time to mature, but it is our mutual desire to contribute to the progress of all people and that is what Brazil will seek to do.”
