Suspect held in torching of miner

More than a month after miner Kester Anderson died after being set on fire by a co-worker, a man has been held and will possibly be charged pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

According to the dead man’s mother, Quenella Griffin, the family learnt the news on Tuesday

following investigations by a hired lawyer. She is unsure of just long the suspect had been in custody prior to her knowledge.

She added that the information was not given by the police.

When contacted, lawyer Nigel Hughes told Stabroek News that the co-worker suspected in the man’s death had been arrested and the police’s completed file is with the DPP awaiting advice.

Meanwhile, Anderson’s mother expressed joy that her son’s alleged killer was in police’s custody. She acknowledged that the task was now up to the law before adding that she is still “taking on” since Anderson’s death.

Anderson, 23, of Samaroo Dam, Pouderoyen, was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital’s burn care unit following an altercation with another miner at Barakat Backdam, Mazaruni. He was reportedly doused with gasoline and set on fire.

He succumbed to his injuries on August 5.
