Knife-point robbery suspect nabbed with piece of stolen chain

A man was yesterday refused bail on an armed robbery charge after a court heard that he was found with a part of a stolen gold chain.

Sundiata Beaton was yesterday remanded to prison after being arraigned before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court One on an armed robbery charge.

The charge is that on September 27, at Georgetown, being in the company of another and armed with a knife, he robbed Marvin Benn of a gold chain and gold band, together valued at $870,000.

Beaton, a taxi driver, of 58 Victoria Road, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, denied the charge when it was read to him.

The prosecution’s facts are that on Saturday afternoon, at 3.20 pm, Beaton and another person were standing on Aubrey Barker Road, South Ruimveldt when Benn approached and enquired from them if they knew someone he was looking for.

The court heard from Prosecutor Michael Grant that the accused responded that he did not know the person. But as Benn turned away, the court was told, Beaton held on to him at knife point, while his accomplice relieved him of his jewellery.

The accomplice managed to escape but after the matter was reported and investigated, Beaton was arrested and charged. According to Grant, pieces of the complainant’s jewellery were recovered in Beaton’s pants pocket.

The prosecution objected to the accused being granted bail citing the nature, gravity, seriousness and prevalence of the offence. Beaton was subsequently informed that he would be remanded to prison.

His matter will be called again on October 17 for statements.
