Fingerprint match lands mechanic on larceny charge

A mechanic was on Friday charged with stealing $350,000 in valuables by breaking and entering a minibus, after his fingerprints were found at the crime scene.

It is alleged that between July 13 and 14, 2014, at Georgetown, Renroy Caesar stole a compact disc and a computer box, together valuing $350,000 belonging to Bhagwattie Persaud, called Shelly.

Caesar, of 3461 Postel Housing Scheme, Stevedore, entered a plea of not guilty when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

According to Prosecutor Michael Grant, on July 13, Persaud parked her minibus and went to bed and when she got up the next morning she discovered one of its windows broken and the articles missing. The theft was reported and police dusted the scene for fingerprints, which matched those of Caesar, Grant said. He was subsequently arrested and charged.

Caesar’s attorney asked for him to be released on self-bail but Grant opposed the application. However, Grant had no objections to bail, which was eventually set at $100,000. Caesar is to return to court on November 14.
