The lifeless body of a teenage biker was fished out of a trench at Nismes, West Bank Demerara (WBD) on Thursday evening after he apparently lost control of his bike and plunged overboard.
A police press release said the police are investigating the fatal accident which claimed the life of Cecil Adolphus also known as ‘Bucket’, 17, of Lot 99 Sideline Dam, Bagotville, WBD.
According to the release, investigations revealed that Adolphus was driving a motorcycle, reportedly at a fast rate, when he lost control of it and ended up in a trench at Nismes. He was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The teen’s mother, Roselyn Gill, told Stabroek News that Adolphus had left their home at 6.30 pm for Stanleytown to attend a party. He was riding a relative’s motorcycle, but his mother said that at the time he left she had no knowledge that he had gone with the bike. He was not licensed to drive it.
The inconsolable wo-man said the next thing she knew was that her son, who she said had been drinking, was involved in a crash.
A villager from Nismes, who spoke to this publication on the condition of anonymity, claimed to have seen Adolphus speeding on the road on Thursday afternoon about 4 pm. “The road had thick smoke from the burning of cane,” the villager said, adding, “and you could hardly see anything.” The villager opined that given the poor visibility, speeding was unwise.
Although no one saw what caused Adolphus to end up overboard, he appeared to have sustained a broken neck. When it was removed from the trench, Adolphus’s body was covered in mud.
The fifth form student, who was preparing to sit the Caribbean Examination Council’s Caribbean Secondary Education Cer-tificate examination, was described as an outgoing and helpful person. Those who gathered to console his mother were seen crying as she related to this newspaper how her son died.
He is survived by his mother and five siblings.
