St. George’s student, 16, stabbed by schoolmate

A fifth form student of the St. George’s Secondary School on Church Street was stabbed by a schoolmate yesterday afternoon.

Tamare Prince, 16, says she was stabbed with a pair of scissors in her left hand as she tried to block a swipe intended for her chest.

Her attacker? A fourth form boy who had been teasing her about another student a short while earlier.

When Stabroek News visited the St. George’s Secondary School yesterday, no official was present to comment on the stabbing.

Prince, however, explained that she had been sitting in a classroom at around 1:45pm when she was approached by the fourth form boy, with whom she had an exchange. She said he tried to hold her hand. Afterward, she headed towards the back of the school to get a broom to defend herself, but she unsuccessful.

Prince said as she was walking back to her classroom, the boy continued to follow her. He then held on to her hand and she told him to let go of her or she would hit him.

At that point, she said he told her, “you knock me and I will bore you with a scissors.”

She added that the fourth former then took aim at the left side of her chest but she used her left hand to avoid the blow, resulting in the wound to her hand.

After Prince was stabbed, a friend took her to wash the blood off and she fainted. She was subsequently taken to the Home Economics classroom, where she fainted twice again. A teacher, who was in the room at the time, placed Prince on a bed to tie her hand in an effort to stop the blood from flowing.

Prince’s mother was alerted by a teacher about the incident and she later arrived along with Prince’s grandfather and they took her to the Georgetown Public Hospital. Prince received three stitches to her hand.

According to the girl’s mother, a report was made to the Brickdam Police Station but the fourth former was not yet arrested. However, they learned that after the stabbing the boy left the school with his mother.

When the girl’s grandfather questioned the teachers about why they didn’t take Prince to the hospital right after the stabbing, he was told that they had to wait on the relatives.
