Providence man killed in hit and run incident

Devon Bellamy was three days short of celebrating his 30th birthday when he was fatally struck down by a speeding jeep early yesterday morning along the East Bank Demerara public road.

Around 1.30 am yesterday, Bellamy had just crossed the road and was standing on the road side when a speeding Suzuki jeep, travelling from Georgetown, slammed into his body. He was pitched some 115 yards away from where the vehicle first hit him.

A cousin of Bellamy, Keyon (only name given) said he was with Bellamy when the incident occurred. He said he saw when the vehicle collided with his cousin and threw him into the air. “He pitch from in front Bollywood bar to the Stadium gate I tell you and the man just drive away,” he said.

Keyon stated that when the accident occurred he ran over the road and had to search for his cousin in the grass. However, he said he had recognized the vehicle and when the police arrived at the scene he directed them to Mocha, Arcadia, where the vehicle would usually park.

“When we reach there, the man de sleeping and he come outside rubbing his eyes. He said he sorry and he panic when it happen,” he related, adding that it was only an hour after the accident that they found the driver.

“He knock a man down and go home and sleep like he knock a dog,” Keyon said.

Bellamy a Caribbean International Distributors Inc worker lived at 114 Canterbury Street, Providence with his aunt. He was expected to celebrate his birthday on Thursday.

Another cousin said a man called her and gave the news. She said Bellamy was badly injured and many of his bones were broken. “Thank God somebody see or else it would have been another hit and run. This man didn’t have a conscience fuh know he knock down a man and go home and sleep!”

According to a police source, ranks were notified of a noise nuisance at the bar and went to warn the owners when they saw a crowd gathered along the side of the road. Upon investigating, they discovered that it was an accident. The source said they had to search the grass for Bellamy and by the time they found him he was dead.

The driver of the vehicle is in police custody.
