Taxi-driver critical after shooting; responding police vehicle kills man

A 20-year-old taxi driver is in a critical condition after he was shot by a ‘passenger’ at Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo while a police vehicle responding to the report struck and killed a man.

Ramesh Persaud of Parika Backdam who operated a private-hire service was at the Parika junction when the man approached him for a ‘special’ just after 9 pm.

He subsequently called his brother, Roland Persaud, 21, telling him he had been shot. The brother rushed to the scene and found him slouched in the driver’s side of his white AT 212 Carina PLL 821 motorcar, covered in blood.

He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted in an unconscious condition.

Meanwhile, patrol ranks from the Leonora traffic department were responding to the report when they struck and killed a man at Greenwich Park.

Reports are that the unidentified man was reportedly under the influence of alcohol and was said to be crossing the road at the time of the accident.
