Pork knocker gets bail after denying knife-point robbery

A Mahdia pork knocker is now on $125,000 bail after denying a robbery charge.

Delon Johnson was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge read against him yesterday in Georgetown.

It is alleged that on November 25, at 111 Miles Mahdia, being armed with a knife, Johnson robbed Eleazer Xavier of a cellphone, a quantity of cash and gold, carrying a total value of $287,000.

The unrepresented man, from the prisoners’ dock, expressed shock about the charge and detailed a story of eight other men who were arrested in the matter and later released. He noted that he had begged the police to have the virtual complainant point him out as the man that robbed him, since he was certain that Xavier could not. “They will just charge me and send me alone down to town,” he told Magistrate Ann McLennan, while questioning why he was singled out from the others.

He also accused police officers of beating him while in custody.

Prosecutor Adunni Inniss objected to bail based on the nature and gravity of the offence, she also told the court that during the last year Johnson was convicted of a similar offence.

However, Johnson was granted $150,000 bail. He then begged the magistrate to reduce the amount, while saying he has a one-year-old daughter to care for. Bail was then set at $125,000 and the case was transferred to the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court for January 19.
