Water St vendor on bail after denying assault on cops

A Water Street vendor was yesterday placed on $40,000 bail after she denied charges of assaulting police officers and damage to property.

Stacy Fung, 23, told Magistrate Ann McLennan, in Georgetown, that she could not beat the six officers who went to arrest her.

It is alleged that on November 28, at Water Street, Fung assaulted police officer James with intent to cause actual bodily harm.

On the same day, Fung is also accused of assaulting Constable Hope, with intent to prevent her apprehension.

She was also charged with damaging a shirt and a metal badge, carrying a total value of $12,500 and damaging a police shirt and a name tag, carrying a total value of $18,500.

The prosecution’s case is that Fung, who is currently on bail on a previous charge, refused to turn up for her trial. Although an arrest warrant was sent for her, she was still absent from court.

As a result, Prosecutor Michael Grant said, two police officers were then sent to apprehend the woman, who refused to be arrested. Instead, she armed herself with a hammer and beat the officers in her bid to prevent apprehension, he added. As a result, other ranks were subsequently summoned and were able to successfully arrest the woman.

Grant objected to bail, while voicing concern that Fung might not return for trial.

When the magistrate asked Fung why she assaulted the police, she said that she refused to go with a male who came to arrest her. “He come first and I refused to go with him, then a female come and she assaulted me,” the woman said, before adding, “six of them come afterwards; I can’t beat six officers.”

She also begged the court to be lenient with her, while noting that she has three children to care for.

She was then placed on a bond to keep the peace until the conclusion of her trial and she was released on $40,000 bail. The case was adjourned until December 8, when it will be called at Court 10.
