Hampshire man knocked down by cop

A 53-year-old watchman of Hampshire, Corentyne is in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital after a police officer riding a motorcycle struck him down yesterday.

The accident occurred around 9 am as Rajindranauth Gowkarran, 53, a watchman was waiting to cross the road.

He was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was treated and immediately transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital in an ambulance.

The father of one sustained severe head and chest injuries, as well as injuries to other parts of his body. His face was also swollen and he was bleeding through his nose. A sister, Radha said he went across to the snackette opposite their home to make a purchase and was struck down as he was waiting to cross the road.

She said she heard a big noise and when she looked she saw her brother being lifted up in the air and falling on the road a short distance away.

In the meantime, the police officer had lost control of the motorcycle which ended up in the trench about 85 ft. away. However, he apparently managed to jump off just in time.

Radha said they ran out to the scene and rushed Gowkarran to the hospital. The policeman was busy trying to get his motorcycle out instead of rendering assistance to the injured man.

According to a senior officer in Berbice, the police was “proceeding east along the northern carriageway” when Gowkarran who was under the influence of alcohol walked from behind a parked truck and crossed the road.
