Magistrate Sohan suspended over actions allegedly ‘bordering on criminality’

Alleged actions bordering on criminality caused the Judicial Service Commis-sion (JSC) to suspend Magistrate Chandra Sohan on Wednesday.

Chairman of the JSC Retired Justice Prem Persaud confirmed the suspension and though tight-lipped about the circumstances, he did say that the decision was brought against the magistrate based on actions “bordering on criminality.”

Prior to his suspension, Sohan was the sitting magistrate at the Traffic Court at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

A source told Stabroek News that some of the magistrate’s records will be cross checked with those of the police as part of the investigation.

Sohan’s suspension follows that of his colleague Alex Moore, who was suspended a week ago following a complaint of inappropriate behaviour during a hearing at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, where he sat.

The JSC is yet to announce a date for a hearing in the matter.
