Sophia youth jailed for robbing Christmas caroler

Two young men were each sentenced to nine months in jail yesterday after they admitted to stealing a Christmas caroler’s collection.

Leroy Worrell and Toban Moses, both of Sophia, admitted that on December 11, at Dennis Street, Georgetown, they robbed K. D’Oliveira of a cellphone and $6,200.

The police’s case is that the two were on a pedal cycle and rode upto the D’Oliveira and demanded the collections received for singing Christmas carols on the street corner.

After their demand was not adhered to, the men then grabbed the collection box along with D’Oliveira’s cellphone and rode away.

An alarm was raised and a police patrol, which was in the area, was quickly alerted and it arrested the men. The stolen items were recovered in their possession.

Moses begged the court to compensate D’Oliveira since he has a small child to care for. Worrell said that he was frustrated being without money, which led to him committing the crime. He also offered to compensate their victim.

Their pleas were, however, denied by Magistrate Ann McLennan, who sentenced both men to nine months in jail.
