(Jamaica Gleaner) Former Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands Michael Misick has arrived in his homeland after being extradited from Brazil.
At news time, Misick was appearing before a magistrate on several charges. The charges include conspiracy to accept bribes and several counts of corruption.
This morning, Misick’s attorney, Oliver Smith, said he intended to apply for bail. Speaking on Nationwide Radio, Smith also indicated that he was anxious to hear the Government’s case against his client. And the Government has reacted to the extradition.
“The UK Government welcomes the arrival of former Premier Michael Misick in TCI to face a number of serious charges relating to corruption and maladministration during his time in office. They are most grateful to the Brazilian authorities for their swift handling of TCI’s extradition request,” said the Governor.
Misick fled the Turks and Caicos Islands around three years ago. In March 2012, a year after he was arrested in Brazil on a warrant issued by Interpol, a Brazilian court ordered his extradition. Misick was released from custody last February but could not leave Brazil as he was facing extradition.
