Over 2,000 lbs of ganja seized at Kingston port

(Jamaica Gleaner) A man has been arrested and over J$10 million worth of ganja seized following a two-day operation by the police at the Kingston Container Terminal in the capital city.

The police’s Corporate Communications Unit reports that the operation was conducted by the Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division on Friday with assistance from the police’s Ports Division and the Contraband Enforcement Team of Jamaica Customs.

A total of 2,168 pounds of ganja were seized. Seven hundred and twenty seven pounds were discovered about 3:00 p.m. on Friday in a 40-foot container originating from Panama and bound for Mexico.

Another 677 pounds were found about 12:30 p.m. Saturday in barrels inside another container, also bound for Mexico. A third parcel of the drugs, weighing approximately 764 pounds, was found in travelling bags inside a container destined for the United Kingdom.

The police are withholding the identity of the man in custody as they continue their investigations.
