Striking CHEC workers return to jobs

(Jamaica Observer) KINGSTON, Jamaica — Approximately 180 workers on the Golden Grove, St Ann, leg of the Highway 2000 north/south link who have been on strike since last week returned to work  yesterday.

OBSERVER ONLINE understands that the workers resumed work on the basis of a decision by China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) to pay them increased rates and provide them with protective gear. However the unions — Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) and National Workers’ Union (NWU) — are insisting that the major issue, which is their representational rights on behalf of the workers is still unresolved, and should discussed at a meeting at the Ministry of Labour next week.
