(Trinidad Express) There has been “a massive 22 per cent drop” in road fatalities between 2010 and 2013.
Furthermore, for the first quarter of 2014, when compared to the first quarter of 2013, there was an additional 15 per cent drop in road fatalities.
So said Transport Minister Stephen Cadiz as he responded to a question in the Senate which had been filed by People’s National Movement (PNM) Senator Dianne Baldeo-Chadeesingh.
Cadiz said what Government had done was “phenomenal” in terms of curbing the carnage on the roads. He said Government had installed more than 27 kilometres in cable barriers and it was estimated that in excess of 87 fatal accidents were avoided as a result of the use of these cable barriers.
Cadiz also cited the traffic warden system and the highway paroles system. Noting that there were 99 brand-new police rapid response vehicles, Cadiz stated: “I don’t think any of us who travel on the highways could say we have not seen these vehicles day and night patrolling the nation’s highways.”
