Rape accused tries to jump through court window

Pandemonium broke out in the Suddie Magistrate’s Court when a labourer charged with rape attempted to jump through a window after he was remanded to prison.

The court heard that on Monday, February 17, at the Charity Squatting Area, Francis Gonsalves, 32, raped a woman. He was not required to plead to the charge and appeared unrepresented in court.

After Magistrate Sunil Scarce remanded him to prison until March 24, Gonsalves, whose feet were shackled, attempted to jump through a window close to the prisoner’s bench. Another prisoner held on to his feet and several officers rushed to assist the man to pull Gonsalves to safety.

“Y’all shoot me and done before y’all gah deh harassing me suh,” he said, as he was being pulled back into the court room.

The man was then escorted to the lower flat of the building and into a waiting police vehicle.
