Warhead safely removed from shot Corentyne teen

The warhead that was lodged in the body of Berbice teen Oumesh Ballram, who was shot by a gunman during an attempted break in at his Number 69 Village home on February 20, was successfully re-moved on Friday.

Ballram is now recovering in the High Dependency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital, following the surgery. The lad’s father, Gurdial Ballram, told Sunday Stabroek that his son is on the road to recovery. “He in a lot of pain,” said Gurdial, “and his foot still not moving.”

In a telephone interview with Stabroek News, Gurdial also said he is still puzzled as to why his son’s attacker is still a free man, while his son is facing possible paralysis.

The frustrated father said the suspect in the crime is free on $50,000 station bail and in contrast, “Me son suffering up to now.” He said he had not the time to enquire from the police about the status of the case. He explained that he is too busy looking after his hospitalised son who is supposed to sit the 2014 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate examinations come May/June. The teen was shot while returning from switching on the main power in the home after a blackout around 8pm. When he was walking towards his verandah, according to his father, a gunman was attempting to enter the home. Gurdial had told this newspaper that he believed Oumesh was shot because the gunman thought it was him, as he is a known licensed firearm holder.
