Lachmansingh Primary science fair focuses on reducing pollution

Judges at a science fair at the Lachmansingh Primary School approved all of the projects displayed for entry into the Region Five exhibition to be held later this month.

Teachers of the school located at Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice pulled off the fair last Friday under the theme: “Live Healthy; Reduce Pollution” in an effort to have the best projects chosen for the regional exhibition.

They were elated when the judges: Mahendranauth Ramjit and Seepersaud Samaroo decided that all five of the entries would go through to compete at the regional level.

The project that impressed the judges more and scored the highest points was a ‘System Plant’ that was designed to crush plastic bottles.

Manufacturers can collect the by-products and convert them to plastic containers, bags, spoons and other items while at the same time create jobs and ensure a cleaner and healthier environment.

That project was designed by two teachers: Felisha Booker, who is also the project coordinator and Hemwanttie Singh.

The other projects on display were titled: ‘Preservation of fruits,’ Garbage Disposal,’ ‘Erosion’ as well as ‘Hydroponics,’ which showcased how cash crops can be grown using coconut fibre, water and recycled plastic bottles.

Booker told Stabroek News that dumping of garbage is an on-going problem in the community and “we want something that can work and to convince people to get involved.”

The objective, she said is to be actively involved in the effective disposal of garbage.

Headmistress, Monica Fraser-Carmichael told this newspaper “I am proud of my teachers who put in a lot of effort to these projects.” She also congratulated them for their good work.
