Miner charged over assault of child’s mother

A miner charged with assaulting and verbally abusing the mother of his child was yesterday placed on $30,000 bail when he appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty.

It is alleged that Mikhail Perreira, 37, of 54 Oleander Gardens, assaulted and used abusive language to Christia Ramlogan, at Festival City, North Ruimveldt on March 11.

Perreira’s lawyer, Paul Fung-a-Fat, told the court that his client and Ramlogan, with whom he shares a child, had a misunderstanding. He further mentioned that the defendant owns Montana Mining Company and made a bail application.

The magistrate granted the defendant $20,000 bail for the assault charge and $10,000 bail for the abusive language charge.

When Perreira was being escorted to the holding cell, he refused to be handcuffed. The young policeman was subsequently told to let Perreira be, by a senior rank, after she realized it would have caused a scene in the active courtroom.

The case will be called again on April 9.
