Five recognised for championing consumers rights

The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce as part of World Consumer Rights Day on Saturday, hosted a ceremony at the International Conference Centre, to honour five persons for their contributions over the years in championing consumers rights in Guyana.

A release from the Guyana National Bureau of Standards said that the awardees were Patrick Dial, Retired Justice Prem Persaud, Clifford Zammett, Marilyn Collins, Eslyn Herbert and Eileen Cox. Cox, who was not present, was recognised for her more than four decades of advocacy for the rights of consumers.

Acting Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Irfaan Ali gave the feature address urging consumers to demand their rights, while not ignoring their responsibilities. He also reiterated government’s commitment to support the manufacturing and services sectors so as to allow them to adequately and efficiently meet the needs of all consumers.

Persaud spoke on behalf of the awardees and expressed gratitude to the organisers of the event for recognising the work that they had done for consumers in various capacities and disciplines over the years.
