Random selection by GRA of consignments for examination continues

Three large firms, a hospital and a businessman’s consignments were on Tuesday randomly selected for manual examination when the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) held another of its weekly selection exercises.

The Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), Sol Guyana Incorporated, Guy Gas Incorporated, Dushant Persaud Seegobin and the Machine Corporation of Guyana Limited were the five selected in the process, during which taxpayers awaiting service from GRA can volunteer to randomly select the name of a business.

The system, according to GRA, had been put in place as another measure to promote transparency

within the organisation and to improve public opinion. “In the past, GRA has been accused by some businesspersons of being biased in the selection of a business for examination,” an official attached to GRA said.

The manual examination system has been in place since February 6 and is carried out twice weekly.

After the businesses names have been selected, the names are then sent to the Goods Examination Unit (GEU) along with the consignment numbers of the selected businesses. After which, the GEU contacts the owners of the businesses and a date is set up for the complete examination of the companies’ containers.

The public also has the opportunity to view the manual examination process every week, GRA said.
