East La Penitence man remanded on gun charge

Junior John, 29, of East La Penitence was brought before the courts yesterday charged with the illegal possession of a firearm.

John was accused of having a .38 revolver without a licence on May 19 on Norton Street. The man pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magis-trate Ann McLennan.

According to Prosecutor Deniro Jones, on the date in question, the electrician was seen by patrolling police ranks walking along Norton Street with a haversack on his back.

He was stopped by the officers and a search was conducted on his person, revealing the gun hidden in the bag. He was subsequently arrested and charged.

Jones added that John had claimed ownership of the weapon.

The man was remanded to prison until May 30 when the matter will be called in Court One of the Georgetown Magis-trates’ Courts.
