‘Insult to ego’ slap

-counselling ordered for couple

Despite a plea to have the case thrown out, 24-year-old Abdool Ameer Khan was on Friday released on $20, 000 bail and will now face trial for assaulting his wife Angelica Persaud.

“It was just a slap. I was not physically harmed in any way. It was only an insult to my ego,” Persaud told city magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond after being asked about her decision not to offer any evidence against her husband.

Prosecutor Jomo Nicholls informed the court that Khan and his wife have been living together for three months. The incident on June 23 at their Lot 5 William Street home was the first time Khan had ever hit her and as such, Persaud said that she no longer wishes to proceed with the matter.

In the circumstances, Nicholls successfully sought an order for the couple to be referred to a probation officer for counselling. The trial begins on July 4.
