Nurse died of drowning, autopsy finds

Terron Watts, the male nurse found dead in the Lamaha canal three days after he went missing, died from drowning while a large number of pills was found in his system.

This is according to the dead man’s aunt, Coretta Eastman, who told Stabroek News that the post-mortem examination (PME) conducted on Wednesday confirmed her belief that Watts’ death was partly self-induced.

“I was not surprised,” she said. “As I said before, I know he kill himself.” In his system, she said, there was an overdose of tablets. She was unable to say just what drug the young man had taken.

Watts was buried the very afternoon of the post-mortem examination, Eastman added.

Watts, a graduate nurse attached to the New Amsterdam Hospital, was found on July 6 by residents of South Sophia. The man was reportedly on anti-psychotic medication and had a history of mental illness.

Watts was familiar with the Lamaha Canal as he would frequently go there to bathe or sometimes opt to swim in the Atlantic Ocean, Eastman had said.
