Mahaicony man dies in accident

Police are investigating the death of Christopher Hookumchand, 22 years, after he was struck by a car early yesterday morning at Columbia, Mahaicony, ECD.

His father, Frankie Hookumchand, told Stabroek News that a car travelling to town crossed over to the right side of the road and struck down the young man, severely crushing him.

Hookumchand’s father stated that his son was at a friend’s house, “he said he was on his way home and dah man just knock he down…you could see where the car drag he bicycle, 50 rods before he turn back.”

He revealed that the driver of the car stated he was a policeman and was taken for a breathalyzer test.

However, he noted that the driver did not produce any form of identification to substantiate his claim.

Hookumchand’s father stated that his son worked tractors for rice farmers and in the out-of-crop season he would work as a mechanic and a carpenter, “he had a good hustle you know, he was good.”

The family is awaiting the results of the post-mortem, which is scheduled for tomorrow before making funeral arrangements.
