Mahdia truck crash survivor may have brain damage

-flown to city for treatment

A Micobie villager was yesterday air dashed to the Georgetown Public Hospital for treatment after he fell out of the tray of a speeding canter along the Mahdia Road.

Antonio Raymond, 30, was transferred to the hospital because doctors at the hospital in Mahdia believe he may have suffered brain injuries in the accident, which claimed the life of his brother, Leonard Raymond.

Antonio told Stabroek News that he and his brother along with other villagers from Region Eight were headed to Mahdia last Saturday when the accident occurred. He said the driver was speeding and made a quick turn around a corner, resulting in the vehicle toppling.

“I woke up in the hospital and then they told me that my brother died in the accident,” he said, yesterday. Antonio and his brother were gold miners. He said his brother, a 37 year-old father of seven, was killed on the spot after his neck snapped.

He, on the other hand, sustained head injuries and remained at the hospital and on Thursday evening he was told that he have to be transferred to the city because he may have sustained brain damage.

“I’m just hoping that everything is okay with me,” he said.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested but was later released. Antonio said he did not know if the man would be charged but his family was handling the matter. “I can’t understand how they would loose him when I’m like this and my brother,” he said.
