Essequibo power outages caused by faults in generating sets

The power supply to residents in the Essequibo region was disrupted between Wednesday and Friday morning.

According to a press release issued by Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL), on August 6, residents in Essequibo experienced a disruption in service from 7.30 pm due to a fault in the automatic voltage control circuitry, which caused the No. 1 Wartsila Engine at Essequibo to be removed from service.

Due to this, it was only the No. 2 Wartsila Engine that supplied power to the residents. This only allowed for an alternating four-hour supply of electricity to customers “in the North stretching from Anna Regina to Charity and in the South from Anna Regina to Supenaam.” There was, however, a complete disruption in electricity output from 3.30 pm until 8 pm, when the main circuit breaker on the unit suffered a component failure.

Full power was restored to both circuits by 1 am on Friday.
