Man shot dead in car on Vlissingen, wife injured

A man was shot dead earlier this afternoon and his wife injured near the traffic light outside the Vlissingen Road entrance of the Botanical Gardens.
From all indications Ashu Raghoo said to be a resident of Pike Street, Kitty died instantly. his wife has been identified as Shayraz Raghoo who is currently being treated at the Georgetown Hospital. Her condition is said to be serious.
While the details surrounding the incident are sketchy, police investigators believe that the couple was traced by the gunman who fled on a motorcycle after discharging rounds.
At the time of the shooting, the couple were in a car which was in the turning lane. Stabroek News was told that persons nearby heard the shots and when they investigated they found Ashu slumped over the steering wheel and his injured wife.
Of recent, there has been an increase in shootings which police believe may be linked to the holiday period.

The police tonight issued the following press release:

At about 1300h. today Monday, August 18, 2014, businessman Ashook Ragghu, 43 years, of Pike Street, C’Ville, Georgetown, and his wife Shyrazabin Ragghu, 49 years, were in a motor vehicle at a traffic light on Vlissengen Road, Georgetown, when they were attacked by two men on a motorcycle, one of whom was armed with a firearm.

The armed man discharged rounds at the victims, fatally wounding Ashook Ragghu to his chest and injuring Shyrazabin Ragghu to her right foot. The perpetrators escaped with a bag containing an undisclosed sum of cash and a licensed firearm and ammunition.

Shyrazabin Ragghu has been admitted to hospital for medical treatment.

Investigations are in progress.
