Elderly forklift operator charged with causing UG worker’s death

An elderly forklift operator was yesterday released on $1M bail after denying that he caused the death of a motorcyclist during a recent accident in the city.

Balgobin Persaud, 69, of Lot 155 La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, denied that he, on August 6, at Dennis Street, Campbellville, drove a forklift 23439 in a dangerous manner to the public, causing the death of Latchman Sukhdeo. The charge was read to Persaud by Magistrate Judy Latchman.

It is the police’s case that Persaud was driving the forklift, with two “metal spikes” to the front, north out of the compound of the Crown Mining Company and turned west on to Dennis Street,
