Duo remanded over beautician’s murder

Two of the four men held in connection with the execution-style killing of beautician Ashmini Harriram, appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with her murder.

It is alleged that Lennox Wayne, also known as ‘Two Colours’, 29, of 1308 Diamond Housing Scheme and Melroy Doris, 26, of ‘N ‘Bent Street, Wortmanville, murdered Harriram, on July 10, at Lugisnan, East Coast Demerara.

Wayne, a drum instructor at the Magic Fingers Drumming School, who told the court that he had been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment on a robbery charge and Doris, a taxi driver, were not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read to them by Magistrate Zamila Ally.

According to reports, Harriram, 18, and her cousin were heading east along the Lugisnan Railway Embankment on July 10, when a burgundy coloured car passed and stopped ahead of them. Harriram, it was said, was hurrying home to tend to a client’s hair. A man exited the car and grabbed her $15,000 cellphone before shooting her in the head. The shooting occurred around 11.15 am, a short distance from her home. The shooter subsequently escaped in the car he had exited.

Relatives were seen embracing each other and crying as the two suspects were being escorted to the courtroom. “God gon judge you,” one relative said to them, only to have Wayne respond, “You know God gon judge me?”

Throughout the arraignment, Wayne sat with a look of disbelief on his face. He whispered and periodically shook his head and turned in the direction of his co-accused.

Doris, on the other hand, stood stoically in the prisoner’s dock, except for when he indicated that he wanted to offer an explanation to the court. But that was aborted after an attorney advised him to remain silent until he had hired a lawyer.

Subsequently, the magistrate remanded the defendants until October 3, when a report will be presented to the court.

When the defendants were being escorted to the holding cell at the Vigilance Police Station, an angry Wayne hurled insults at Doris.
