Man to face trial over attempt to kill friend

Tony Marcus, who stands accused of attempting to murder a friend during a row over money, was committed to stand trial yesterday.

At conclusion of the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the charge, Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry informed Marcus that based on the evidence against him, he was committed to stand trial in the High for the attempted murder of Etwaroo Narine, called ‘Cow.’

The Chief Magistrate informed Marcus that he could make a sworn statement, an unsworn statement or no statement at all. He declared his innocence and opted to reserve his right to call witnesses in the High Court.

It is alleged that on July 6, 2014, at Mc Doom, Marcus wounded Narine with intent to commit murder.

It is the prosecution’s case that on the day in question Narine was in a shop at McDoom drinking when the accused approached him and an argument ensued between them over money. According to Prosecutor Bharat Mangru, it was during this time that Marcus dealt Narine several chops about his face and body. The matter was later reported and Marcus was arrested and charged.

The PI commenced on Monday and saw two police witnesses and four civilian witnesses, including Narine, giving evidence against Marcus.
