Following the scheduling of recent blackouts, the power supply to Demerara and Berbice is expected to be normalised after the installation of a replacement component for the turbocharger of a Guyana Power Light Inc (GPL) diesel generator at Kingston on Thursday night.
On Monday, GPL announced that generating capacity in the Demerara/Berbice Integrated System (DBIS) had been significantly lowered since Sunday due to shortfall in expected imported energy from GuySuCo’s Skeldon generating facility and the failure of the turbo charger on GPL’s No.3 Wartsila set located at Kingston, Georgetown.
The strike ended on Wednesday and GPL reported that as a result, functioning of the Co-gen facility has been gradually restored and increasing levels of generating capacity made available to the GPL grid. It is expected that the maximum available capacity from Skeldon will be available prior to the evening peak demand, it added.
In addition, the replacement component for the turbocharger of the No. 3 diesel generator at Kingston arrived on Thursday evening and is now in working order, which is expected to reduce power outages.
An official from GPL told Stabroek News that although the problem has been rectified, the company will be monitoring the efficiency of the system at Kingston.
The No. 1 Diesel Generator at the Kingston 1 Plant, which is undergoing planned major overhaul, remains on schedule to return to service on Sunday, September 28.
